Born and raised in Seoul, South Korea, Bora Hah is a bilingual writer who writes fiction, nonfiction, and screenwriting in Korean and English. Her work explores Korean history, intergenerational trauma, and resilience, often through the lens of Han — a Korean concept of accumulated grief, anger, silence, and endurance.
Her nonfiction collection “At Last the Grief Fell Asleep” won the 2014 Sookmyung Women’s University Autobiography Contest, which led to an interview with the Korea Joongang Daily. The following year, her short story “Koreatown” received the Kim Yong Literature Award.
Seeking new horizons, she moved to Hawaiʻi, where she earned an MA in English at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. During her studies, her short story “A Free Life” was named runner-up for the Viet Thanh Nguyen Writing Contest. Since then, her work has appeared in Bamboo Ridge, Tint Journal, and Black Horse Review. She is an alumna of the Tin House Workshop.
She now lives in Seoul, writing a speculative memoir titled “The Han of a Woman,” a book that follows three generations of Korean family shaped by war, loss, silence, and survival.
장맛비가 쏟아지는 93년 여름, 서울에서 태어났다. 작가가 될 생각은 없었으나 어렸을 때부터 이야기의 세계에 푹 빠져 지냈고, 무엇보다 사람에게 관심이 많았다.
그러다 2014년, 우연한 계기로 쓴 자서전 《마침내 슬픔이 잠들었다》가 숙명여자대학교 미리 쓰는 자서전 대회에서 대상을 타는 일이 있었다. 조용히 지나가는 줄 알았는데 수상 소식이 중앙일보 사회면에까지 실리게 되자 조금만 더 글을 써보자고 생각했다. 1년 뒤인 2015년엔 단편 소설 《코리아타운》으로 김용문학상을 받으며 소설의 영역으로 자리를 옮겨갔다.
대학을 졸업한 뒤에는 번역원에 들어가 전문 문학 번역가가 되려 하였으나 미국에 가서 문예 창작을 공부하면 번역과 창작 둘 다 가능한 이중 언어 작가가 될 수 있단 교수님의 말에 유학을 결심, 2020년 봄엔 하와이대학교 영문학 석사 과정을 졸업했다. 학교를 다니는 도중 집필한 단편 소설 《자유로운 인생》이 비엣 타인 응우옌 상을 받았고, 해당 작품이 하와이 지역 문예지에 실리게 되면서 미국에서 작가로 정식 데뷔했다.
이후 서울로 돌아와 한국방송작가협회 교육원에서 드라마 과정을 이수했다. 그곳에서 맺은 인연으로 드라마 세계에 입문했고, 현재는 장르와 언어에 얽매이지 않는 자유로운 창작 활동을 이어가고 있다.
