The Inner Garden

The day before my birthday, it rained. And seeing that, my friend said, “Even the sky is wailing for our separation.”

The rain continued through the next day. Early in the morning, I left the hotel and slipped into the forest. I sat by a pond and watched fresh water lilies and sage green summer trees breathing peacefully around the still water. It was a cool, grey day — the crazy summer heat that had lasted for the entire week was finally gone.

Then, just when I was about to get up, something touched my arm. When I looked, I saw a bright yellow butterfly. She stayed, circled, went away, came back, and disappeared.

I received many messages and gifts that day, but the most memorable one was her — Miss Butterfly from the Japanese garden. She looked so free and dazzling, and I wished I could be the same.
